Boise, Idaho in the News

According to a March 2, 2018 Idaho Statesman article Boise is one of the fastest-growing cities in the country.  Quoting Forbes, the capital city exceeded 2017 expansion projections “by nearly every metric that matters.”  Moody’s Analytics indicates that Boise’s growth spurt is likely to continue.

Boise has “the pieces in place.  It’s got the location, it’s got low cost, a healthy tech presence,” Moody’s senior economist Adam Kamins told Forbes.

The Idaho Statesman goes on to say “Locals who dig their heels in against the explosive growth may take some comfort in Forbes 2018 projections”. The rate of growth should taper off, experts say. Most notably, Boise’s climbing home prices are projected to slow considerably (from fourth-highest in the country to a projected spot of 23rd).

In 2018, the city’s population will grow an estimated 2.34 percent, Forbes predicts, and jobs will grow about 2.61 percent. Local economic growth is expected to hold steady at eighth in the nation, or 5.12 percent. Wages should climb 5.7 percent, the fifth-fastest projected increase in the nation.

NPR: Idaho Leads U.S. As Fastest Growing State, Census Bureau Reports

Following in the footsteps of the Oregon Trail fur traders, Americans are again flocking to the West in great numbers, according to new data from the U.S. Census Bureau. But of course, this time they aren’t making the journey in covered wagons.

Idaho saw its population jump by 2.2 percent from July 1, 2016 to July 1, 2017, leading the nation as the fastest growing state. Three other western states saw similar growth during that same period: Nevada, Utah and Washington. The overall U.S. population also grew by 2.3 million.

A new year, a new beginning. If moving is in the cards for you this year, and you have pets, you may feel that you are facing a huge hurdle, bigger than moving usually is. Moving in itself is no easy matter, and if moving across state lines, or countries, it may feel a little daunting. If your beloved pets are also part of this equation, then it becomes very serious indeed. But take heart, it just seems worse than it is. We all know people that moved successfully with pets, and pets have been known to travel long distances by plane or car. I know somebody who recently, in December, moved from one country to another with two cats and two dogs, and they all lived to tell the tale.

Some things to keep in mind:

• Visit your vet and make sure that your pet is in good health, has all the necessary and required documentation, and ask if mild sedation is a good idea for your specific pet.
• Make sure you know the required health certificates at your destination, if you are moving across state or country lines.
• Secure your pets at all times when in unfamiliar surroundings.
• Make sure your pets are chipped or have identification in case they are separated from you.

☆ overhanging branches over outside chimney stack/flue
☆ not having fireproof woodstove floor extension or fireproof fireplace hearth
☆ no fireplace screen
☆ leaving open fires burning in fireplace unattended, overnight or for long periods of time w/o supervision
☆ space heaters that are not safety tested/approved
☆ smoking cigarettes in bed
☆ burning candles too near objects and leaving unattended

there are also many other causes for fire not listed.

The best course of action to prevent loss of life, money consuming disasters/fires is always being pro active.

In addition to beautiful scenery, fresh air, open spaces, and friendly people, Idaho has the fourth-cheapest cost of living in the country. So, we have noticed our population growing. Here in Boise, we are seeing a boom. Newcomers are settling in around our capital city.

According to a Washington Post article “Why people really want to move to Idaho but are fleeing our neighbor, Wyoming” by Andrew Van Dam, the Gem State is no longer a home for coal miners, we have moved into agriculture, forestry, manufacturing, technology and services.

He says there are a few differences between Idaho and our neighbor, Wyoming. One of those differences has to do with the fact that Wyoming has a powerful coal industry and has left the state’s economy at the mercy of the boom-and-bust cycles.
